The Subclass 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa is a temporary pathway with no route to permanent residence.
Before applying, the child must first lodge and have a sponsorship approved; only then can the parent apply. It lets parents stay in Australia for up to 5 years per visa, and up to 10 years in total across two visas.
The 870 has no contribution and no AoS — it uses a sponsorship and charge structure instead. It suits families who want long stays together without joining the long permanent-residence queue.

How to apply
1. Child applies & is approved as sponsor
The child (or their partner) first lodges a parent sponsorship and has it approved.
2. Parent lodges the 870 visa
The parent applies for the 870 using the approved sponsorship.
3. Health & character
Meet health and character requirements.
4. Grant + temporary stay
Once granted, stay for up to 5 years; you may apply once more, up to 10 years total. No pathway to PR.
