What you need to know about securing visa status for babies born in Australia after parents have submitted a visa application.

A common concern for new parents in Australia is securing proper visa status for babies born after a visa application has been submitted. The good news is that a baby born after the visa application is generally taken to have the same visa as their parents from birth, even if notification to the Department is delayed.

If one or both parents have received permanent residence visas, their newborn is entitled to Australian citizenship at birth. Parents will not face additional visa application costs for newborns added after initial approval.

To formalize the child's immigration status, parents should obtain the birth certificate and passport, notify the Department of Immigration by email, and submit a Form 1022 (Change of Circumstances) with supporting documents.

What To Do

1

Step 1: Obtain Documents

Secure the baby's birth certificate and passport as soon as possible after birth.

2

Step 2: Notify Immigration

Email the Department of Home Affairs using the same email address from your original visa application to notify them of the birth.

3

Step 3: Submit Form 1022

Complete and submit the Change of Circumstances form (Form 1022) with the birth certificate and passport details via post or online portal.

Citizenship for PR Holders

If one or both parents hold permanent residence at the time of birth, the baby is automatically entitled to Australian citizenship. You can apply for a citizenship certificate through the Department of Home Affairs.
