Working Holiday visas allow young people from approved countries to holiday and work in Australia for up to 12 months. There are two subclasses: the Subclass 417 Working Holiday visa and the Subclass 462 Work and Holiday visa, each covering different passport countries.

Visa holders can work for up to 6 months with the same employer (with some exceptions) and study for up to 4 months. You must be outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is granted.

If you complete a minimum of 88 days of specified work in regional Australia (farming, fishing, mining, construction), you may be eligible for second and third working holiday visas, extending your stay up to 3 years total.

Visa Subclasses

Subclass 417 Working Holiday

For passport holders from specific countries
  • Age limit: under 31 (up to 35 for Irish, French, Canadian)
  • 12-month visa with work and holiday rights
  • Second visa available with 88 days regional work
  • Third visa available with additional 6 months regional work

Subclass 462 Work and Holiday

For passport holders from different approved countries
  • Age limit: under 31
  • 12-month visa with work and holiday rights
  • Second and third visa extensions available
  • Government support letter may be required

  • Passport from an approved country for 417 or 462
  • Under 31 years old (up to 35 for some 417 countries)
  • Sufficient funds for initial stay (approx. AUD $5,000)
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Must be outside Australia when applying and at visa grant
Second/Third Visa
  • Minimum 88 days specified work in regional Australia for second visa
  • Additional 6 months specified regional work for third visa
  • Specified work: farming, fishing, mining, construction, tree farming
